New Resident's Checklist

Congratulations and welcome to Hilton Head Plantation! As a courtesy to our new Property Owners, we have developed the following checklist to help make "moving in" a little less hectic and a little more organized. The list includes some very practical information on utility and municipal services as well as information about how to obtain important POA services.

  • Transfer electrical service into your name. Call Palmetto Electric at 681-5551.
  • To arrange for phone service, call Hargray Telephone Company at 686-5000.
  • There is a map of Hilton Head Island with a street index in the center of the Hargray Communications Telephone Directory.
  • To arrange for cable TV service, call Time Warner at 866-892-7201 or Hargray Telephone Company at 800-726-1266 or 843-686-5000.
  • Stop by the POA Service Center to get your Property Owner's decals and Personal Identification Number (PIN), that will enable you to call in passes for your guests, and to receive important information about Hilton Head Plantation.
  • The U.S. Post Office is located at 213 William Hilton Parkway (Route 278). From the Main Gate, turn right onto Route 278. The Post Office is beyond the third traffic light on the right, past the Pantry Convenience Store.   From the Cypress Gate go around the circle, turn right onto Gumtree Road, continue traveling down Gumtree Road, and just before you reach the pantry Convenience Store, turn right onto Marsh Point Lane.  Go past the Pantry; the Post Office is on the left.
  • Library - The Hilton Head Library is located at 11 Beach City Road  (342-9200).  From the Main Gate, turn left onto route 278; at the first traffic light, turn left onto Beach City Road. The Library is on the left.
  • Water and Sewer service is provided by Hilton Head Public Service District (PSD), located at 21 Oak Park Plaza. Telephone 681-5525.
  • Seasonal Beach Passes (Beach Parking Passes) -  If you own property in the Town of Hilton Head you may obtain a Beach Parking Pass for $30. The pass, which is good for two years, entitles you to park your vehicle in several parking areas with beach access to the ocean.  A Beach Pass may be obtained at the Town's new Facilities Management Department at 12 Gateway Circle (342-4580), hours:  8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday.  Directions from the Main Gate:  Turn left onto Route 278, take the first left after Mathews Drive onto Dillon Road, take a left onto Gateway Circle; the office is located on the right.  A Pass can also be obtained at the Town of Hilton Head Business License Office at 1 Town Center Court (341-4613).  Directions from the Main Gate:  Turn left onto Route 278, continue traveling on 278 until you reach the entrance of Wexford Plantation, which will be on your right.  Before the gate, turn right into the Town Center; the office is located in Building #1.

  • Becoming a South Carolina resident?  If so, you will need to change your Driver's License and vehicle registration.  To get your Driver's License you need to provide proper identification (including a document showing your Social Security number).  A pay stub usually is sufficient. For your vehicle registration, you will need to pay personal property tax on the vehicle before it can be registered.  Personal property taxes are based on the cost and mileage of the vehicle being registered.  Personal Property taxes are paid at the Government Center (842-4206) at 539 William Hilton Parkway.  A South Carolina Driver's License is important when you need to show you are a local resident.

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is located on the mainland at
15  Sheridan Circle on the south side of Route 278.   Directions from the Main Gate:
Turn right onto 278, go over the bridge to the mainland, continue on 278 for approximately
10 miles, turn left into Sheridan Circle (just past Home Depot).

  • Register to vote -- You can also register to vote when you get your South Carolina Driver's License.  Or, stop by the Government Center located at 539 William Hilton Parkway and register to vote.
  • Apply to the County Assessor's Office at 525-7295 for "full-time resident" status. Full-time residents are subject to a different Assessment ratio (4% versus 6%), which is a 33% reduction in your real estate taxes. In order to qualify, you must be a resident for one year.

            County Office Locations:
Hilton Head office:   539 William Hilton Pkwy.       tel. 843-341-8411
